Give it some thought
Search
in rescue is both physically and mentally demanding. Many searches happen late at night or early in the morning. They occur
during holidays, during the work week and often times at the most inopportune times. When a search occurs, someone’s
life depends on you responding quickly.
The training
is also demanding. An average person involved in search and rescue puts in 30 to 50 hours a month. It's not unheard of
for a person to spend upwards of 100 hours a month the first year in search and rescue. On top of the basic search and rescue
demands training and keeping a canine skilled and at it's best can be exhausting.
On
the other hand search and rescue is very rewarding. The first time your dog makes a find all the hard work seems
worth it. If you are fortunate enough to be a part of a search team that finds a subject, such as a 4-year-old child that
would have not lasted the night, your time and dedication is a small price to pay.
